Buffalo has announced the release of two Blu-ray burners that record at 8x speed. The external BR-816U2 and the internal, Serial ATA-based BR-816FBS are theoretically capable of recording 50GB dual-layer discs in as little as 15 minutes, while burning at 2x for dual-layer BD-R, BD-RE, and LTH BD-R. We say ‘theoretically’ capable of recording at 8x speed because BDA-approved media maxes out at 6x.
Each drive is bundled with Cyberlink’s PowerDVD 7 suite and are priced at ¥46,700 ($435) for the BR-816SU2 external drive or ¥41,000 ($380) for the BR-816FBS internal iteration when they release in Japan in August. An international release is likely, although nothing has officially been announced.

It looks like Hitachi is offering folks a way to save their HD movies without the need of a PC with the Wooo DZ-WR90 Blu-ray recorder. Simply plug your HD hard drive based camcorder into the DZ-WR90 and it’ll record the content right onto a Blu-ray disc. The DZ-WR90 would allow you to burn three hours of full-res footage onto a Blu-ray disc in one and half hours time or one hour of 720 x 480 video onto a blank DVD. It does not allow for any editing features, just straight camcorder to Blu-ray disc transfer. Looks like this one is will only be available in Japan for the time being. No price or U.S. availability has been announced as of yet.

Tweaktown just reviewed the Lite-On DX-401S and gave it good marks mainly because of its portable form-factor. The most appealing thing about the Blu-ray drive is that it connects via USB 2.0 making it versatile and easy to carry anywhere. The DX-401s is priced at a decent $150-$200 making it an affordable option compared to the standalone players or the PS3. The drive itself has solid build quality and the noise levels are nearly non-existent. Like any external Blu-ray ROM drive that uses 2.0 is that it adds so much more functionality. The only gripe is that it’s lack of DVD writing capabilities but it’s forgivable because it keeps the price down.

According to IDC, premier global provider of market intelligence, DVD burners will continue to be the leading volume product until 2012. As DVD burner prices get lower and remain the preferred choice in the PC market, Blu-ray adoption will accelerate in 2009 and will take the majority of the market value in 2012. Right now DVD burners are the ‘bread and butter business’ in their market and Blu-ray drive adoption is limited because of high cost and a lukewarm consumer interest. One interesting prediction is that more than 100 million Blu-ray drives will be shipped worldwide in 2011.

LG Electronics’ Middle East company has released the Super Multi Blue Blu-ray Disc Rewriter (BE06) making it the fastest rewriter that reads and writes Blu-ray at 6x. The BEO6 is an external rewriter that is targeted for laptop users or those with multiple PCs and can be connected via USB 2.0 and a DC power connector. The Super Multi Blue-ray Disc Rewriter (whew, that was long) has Optical Pickup Technology that supports Blu-ray disc write/playback, HD-DVD playback, and DVD/CD write playback. LG’s proprietary technology, Optical Pickup, is essentially the device reading and storing data by converting the code of light reflected by an optical disc to electric code. The cost is $549 and a release date for the U.S. is yet to be announced.
