Tips to buying a Blu-ray drive for your PC

Blu-ray drive

Here are a few tips for those of you thinking of adding a Blu-ray drive to your PC. Affordable drives are now available for PCs such as the Pioneer BDC-202 or LG GGC-H20L that start from $130. These are combo drives capable of reading Blu-ray discs only, but they offer DVD and CD playback and recording. Blu-ray burners are still expensive with the cheapest ones starting at about $250. But high cost for blank media means using an external hard drive to backup data is still a better choice.

The biggest obstacle seems to be screen size because most won’t be able to tell the difference from a DVD. Anyone wanting to watch a Blu-ray film on their PC should have at least a 24″ monitor which handles the full High-Definition resolution of 1920 X 1080. Gieselmann from the Hanover-base c’t magazine recommends waiting for pre-packaged Blu-ray PCs to hit the market or buying a PS3 for the living room instead.
