Nielsen Blu-ray sales and market share for week ending June 1, 2008

BR Sales 6-01-2008

Looks like Rambo flexed his muscles last week and took the top spot from National Treasure: Book of Secrets on the Nielsen VideoScan Top 20 chart. Not only that, but Blu-ray sales managed to increase its market share and took in 10% of all title sales versus DVD, the highest share since the format’s inception. Rambo took 12 percent of the titles sales from DVD, twice the share the Blu version of National Treasure: Book of Secrets was able to last week. Even though Rambo outsold Book of Secrets on Blu-ray, it wasn’t able to take the top spot in DVD sales.

We can’t wait for next week’s numbers because there were a record number of titles released, 55 to be exact, and it should increase the 10% market share from this week. Granted, a lot of them were the catalog titles that Paramount reissued, but it should help out nonetheless.

BR Sales 5-25-08

It looks like the release of National Treasure 1 and 2, did indeed come out at the top spot last week and helped Blu-ray increase their market share by 7% overall versus DVD. The National Treasure two-pack came in third place, making the National Treasure releases a huge success and leaving all other titles way behind. However, if you throw in DVD sales in the mix, National Treasure 2 on Blu-ray only managed 6.98% of overall title sales. Another downer is that once again 10 of the top 20 best sellers on DVD aren’t available on Blu-ray yet. Overall it was a better week in the increases we saw in market share. We’re not sure if Rambo is going to have enough ammo to give Blu another increase next week.

It looks like two new release made it into the top 20 this week, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. Once again half of the top 20 titles on DVD aren’t available on Blu-ray, such as each of the first three Indiana Jones movies. Consumers will just have to wait until more catalog titles are released on Blu-ray to even the availability between both formats.

As for the market share, Blu-ray sales went up 21.71% over last week but that figure still accounts for 5% of the top 20 sales. We’re looking forward to next week’s numbers to see if new release National Treasure 2: Book of Secrets or any of the Paramount reissues made an impact on sales.

With all the buzz surrounding the slow adoption of Blu-ray players it’s time to look at the latest sales figures. There are 9 titles from the top 20 selling DVDs that don’t appear in the Top 20 for Blu-ray sales. Again this is due to titles that not having been released on the new format yet. By comparison, only 1 Blu-ray title, Over America is exclusive to the format. This information is most likely due also to the fact that hot new titles have not been released on Blu-ray recently. Upcoming titles such as National Treasure 2, releasing this upcoming Tuesday, might help with sales.

Although sales for Blu-ray dropped by 7.3% but overall still held of the 5% market share versus DVD. So overall it was a neutral week for Blu-ray sales. Looks like things will be getting worse before they get better. Let’s see how next week’s numbers stack up.

The top selling Blu-ray title was the Golden Compass, which outsold place 27 Dresses by a 3:1 margin. Interestingly enough, 27 Dresses was the top selling DVD during the same span. One thing to note is that 8 out of the top 20 DVD titles are not available on Blu-ray but that should change as the rest of the studios move over to the new format.

Overall Blu-ray sales were down 23% from the previous week, while DVD sales went down by only 5%. This accounts for why Blu-ray saw a market share of 5% compared to 6% the week before. Let’s remember that weekly sale trends a lot of times are based on the titles being released that week so let’s see how Blu fares next week.
