It’s been less than a month since Pioneer announced their 16-layer 400GB Blu-ray disc and now they’ve announced that a 500GB Blu-ray disc is feasible. Research by a team of engineers at Pioneer HQ, Tokyo has found this 20-layer Blu-ray disc is possible by applying proprietary technology to the layers of the optical discs. The only thing we need to know if these will play in current Blu-ray players and drives. Pioneer previously mentioned that some kind of modification might be necessary but so we’ll keep our fingers and see what happens.

Pioneer announced this week they have developed a read only Blu-ray disc technology that allows up to 400GB on a single disc. The new Pioneer technology has 16 layers, 25GB per layer, on a single 12-centimeter Blu-ray disc. By comparison, current Blu-ray discs hold 25GB on a single layer disc and 50GB on a dual-layer disc.
Will it work with existing Blu-ray players? Pioneer announced that, “it is possible to maintain compatibility between the new 16-layer optical disc and the BD discs.” However, some kind of modification may be necessary, either in the production of these new high density discs or existing Blu-ray players.
Either way, it’s good to hear companies trying to expand the already high capacity of Blu-ray discs.

Pioneer announced today that it plans to launch Blu-ray recorders by the end of the year. Even though we’ve seen Blu-ray recorders from other companies, this move by Pioneer is facilitated by the end of the war format. According to Fuji Chimera Research Institute, Blu-ray recorder demand in Japan is likely to jump 18 fold to 3.6 million units by 2012.
Sharp, which is Pioneer’s top shareholder with a 14 percent stake, will help develop the Blu-ray recorders. No model or price have been announced yet, but we’ll report it as soon as it’s available.
